Picture Books About Friendship: Heartwarming Stories That Teach Kids to Connect
One of the first relationships
that children learn to make after their family relationships is friendship.
They learn to share, listen, welcome others, deal with differences, and provide
comfort to people when they are unsure of themselves through friendship. These
lessons are easier to understand using picture books featuring friendship
stories, colourful illustrations and characters children can relate to and look
at over and over.
One of the loveliest has been the book, A Heartwarming
Journey by Debbie Thomas-Corke,
a book about Kiskadee's Big Adventure. A beautifully illustrated tale of a
little dog who leaves a shelter in Trinidad and journeys to England where she
discovers that friendship will help make even the biggest changes feel less
scary.
A New Beginning for Kiskadee
Kiskadee starts her tale as a dog in a doggy home with lots
of sunshine, but she is a nervous puppy. She longs to find a family but it is
an emotional time to leave the shelter. The other dogs bark goodbye as she's
whisked away and it's a touching reminder of the bonds that can be formed
between animals even before they find their forever home.
Adopted, Kiskadee is happy to start her new life. Her new
house is comfortable, safe, and provides an opportunity for friendship. But, when
you move to a different country, many things seem strange, foreign, different
to the weather, the landscape, the sounds, the customs of England.
These changes offer a chance for children to learn about
what it's like to be new somewhere and how welcoming friendships can be.
Meeting New Friends
Kiskadee gets to know two older dogs, Kaiser the Yorkie and
Kaycee the Chihuahua when she arrives at her new home. They are very dissimilar
personalities. Kaiser is wise and somewhat grumpy, Kaycee is energetic, playful
and eager to help Kiskadee get settled.
Kaycee immediately becomes a great friend and guide. She
introduces Kiskadee to the sites to nap, the squeaky toys to play with and
helps Kiskadee explore the garden. Their friendship shows that a friendship can
be patient, encouraging and learning from each other.
This is a safe book for young readers to read and comprehend
that friends don't have to be the same. Friendships can be more interesting and
meaningful because of differences in age, personality and habits.
Supporting Someone Through Fear
One of the most relatable moments in Kiskadee’s Big
Adventure occurs when Kiskadee goes for her first walk on a lead. She has not
worn one before and is not used to it, feels awkward and uncomfortable in it. She's
also nervous about all the new noises that fall brings, too.
Kaycee doesn't leave her to deal with these emotions on her
own, but she stays by her side, and reassures her. She encourages Kiskadee
saying “Let's do this together.” Kiskadee is gradually taught to walk on a lead
in a proud position with the help of patience.
One of the most powerful calls of the book. Children can
learn that differences should not be a source of embarrassment. A caring friend
makes us feel accepted without pressure.
Why Friendship Stories Matter?
The best picture books about
friendship invite the children to consider kindness, belonging and
emotional support. They demonstrate how friendship can start with a simple
'hello' and develop through the experience of friendship, patience and
understanding.
Kiskadee's Big
Adventure is a wonderful example provided by Debbie Thomas-Corke. As children
learn through Kiskadee, Kaycee and Kaiser, they realize that friendships can
turn strange places into familiar ones.
