Spiritual Journey Through Trauma, Healing, and Self-Discovery
The most challenging experiences in life can cause emotional
and spiritual wounds. Trauma can alter our perspective on ourselves and the
world, but it can also be the first step towards understanding ourselves and
what's important. Many people find healing to bring a sense of increased
resiliency, compassion, and purpose, though the path of healing is often not
linear.
A spiritual
journey isn’t one where pain is suppressed or where quick answers are
sought. But it's a matter of growth, discovering inner strength, and rebuilding
hope, one step at a time.
A trauma-informed
framework for understanding trauma beyond the physical
Trauma is more than a response to a single event. It can be
caused by loss, abuse, sickness, accident, grief or chronic stress. No two
people will experience the same thing, and healing may take different lengths
of time for each person.
Trauma may affect:
·
Emotional well-being
·
Physical health
·
Relationships
·
Self-esteem
·
Sense of purpose
·
Spiritual beliefs
In many cases, it is important to acknowledge these impacts
to truly recover.
A spiritual journey is the process of ongoing exploration of
values, beliefs, purpose, and connection to something greater than self. For
some it could be about religion, for others it could be about being mindful,
being in nature, thinking about something or doing something nice.
The spiritual journey is not about quick fixes, it's about
being patient, self-aware and developing in life's process.
After difficult
experiences, finding meaning:
Post-trauma is one of the toughest questions to answer after
trauma: How do I move forward?
While healing does not remove difficult experiences from
one's life, many people do begin to find a new meaning in these experiences as
they move forward. Some start to be more compassionate, have better
relationships, or appreciate more things in life.
A search for meaning can happen in the following ways:
·
Using personal values in reflection
·
Setting new life goals
·
Helping others
·
Feeling reconnected to faith and/or spirituality
·
Practicing gratitude
·
Embracing personal growth
The meaning evolves and can come in many ways other than dramatic change,
especially through regular reflection.
Self-compassion is so
important.
The first step in healing is to treat yourself like you
would a dear friend.
Self-compassion involves:
·
Allowing difficult feelings to arise, without
judgement
·
Recognizes that healing is a process
·
Celebrating small victories
·
Release from unrealistic hopes
·
Taking rest as necessary
You allow yourself some time to heal emotionally and
spiritually when you're patient with yourself.
Mindfulness and Inner Peace
Mindfulness is about being present rather than swept up in
past or future.
Some basic mindfulness exercises are:
·
Deep breathing
·
Quiet meditation
·
Journaling
·
We relax and enjoy the outdoors. Spending time
outside in nature.
·
Prayer or reflection
·
Indulging in a gentle physical activity like
yoga or walking
These can all be useful techniques to alleviate stress and
increase emotional awareness and calm.
The Bible class will
explore how to build Resilience through Faith and Hope.
Faith is a source of comfort to many people at the hardest
times of their lives. Spiritual beliefs have the power to provide hope, to
promote forgiveness and to help someone realize that they are not suffering
alone.
Resilience can be found in others through supportive
communities, meaningful relationships, or through an individual's philosophy of
compassion and purpose.
Hope can be a great motivator for change and healing, no
matter which way it goes.
The Community's Role
in Healing
Rarely do the healing processes occur in isolation.
Having a supportive network of people can offer
encouragement, understanding and perspective.
Healthy support can be provided by:
·
Family members
·
Trusted friends
·
Faith communities
·
Support groups
·
Mentors
