What are the Most Common Formats for Illustrated Books?

There are numerous types of illustrated books, and each is forever shaping the manner in which text and image work together. For children’s stories, graphic novels, and coffee table books, the format matters greatly in how people read the books. Deciding the format to be used requires consideration of the type of the book, the intended reader, and over all structure. Below follows a consideration on the most popular forms of illustrated books through the market.

1. Picture Books

Books with illustrations are common in children literature especially for young readers or those learners who are learning to read. Reading books which are usually of low number of pages with more use of illustrations to match children’s attention. It also makes it possible to have picture and word combinations in the form of a full-page picture and text while some of them are solely picture to let the picture develop the story.

The usual dimensions of picture books are 8 x 10 inches, or 9 x 12 inch formats are widely used, but some are square. This size allows sketches to be displayed in detail while at the same also being portable for the small hands of children to handle.

2. Graphic Novels

Graphic novels are a relatively young format of works that are presented through images and words in a sequence style. Thus, graphic novels differentiate from more typical comic books, at least by length and by the level of plot complexity. It can span any and all categories – science-fiction and fantasy, memoirs and historical stories.

Most graphic novels are printed in portrait layout with common size of a book being 6x9, but other sizes are also prevalent for the purpose of better art work. The layout works with the panels, so that people can follow that part of the story through the pictures, but there is always further explanation in the words and descriptions.

3. Coffee Table Books

Coffee table books are big, expensive, and aimed to be shown in living rooms, apartments or any room where people gather. It may focus on art, photography, fashion, architecture or travel and the drawings are the core part of the book. Text is often limited to a bare minimum thereby giving way to the images more of the breast.

The size of these books is usually larger than those of traditional books, sizes of these books fall between 10 x 12 inches up to 11 x 14 inches. The large size is good for the large-scale publishing of images, especially photography and arts where quality is of premium importance.

4. Children’s Chapter Books with Pictures

Picture books pointed directly to children while illustrated chapter books fall somewhat in between, providing stories appropriate for children who are transitioning from picture book design and illustration to improved lengthy stories. These books have illustrations on different parts of the text besides having illustrations at least every three pages to support the text and assist the readers to read the story.

While picture books are generally large, illustrated chapter books are much smaller in size or maybe equally sized with traditional novels: 5 x 7 inches, 6 x 9 inches, etc. The illustrations are normally black and white; they are interspersed in the text, allowing the readers a break from the text while not stepping out of the context of the picture.
