What elements make a cover design effective?
A book cover is a
heraldic coat on a literary work; it is the inaugural experience through which
a reader checks out your book either to embark on reading or to pass by it.
However, cover design is not just about the ‘artwork’, it is about the artful
mix of aspects that are able to get people’s attention, give an idea about the
book’s genre and be appealing to the audio book’s target audience. Therefore,
what can be considered as the major factors which define an efficient custom book cover design?
1. Strong Visual Hierarchy
Visual hierarchy is an organization of the discovered design elements in such a way that the human eye flows through the design as fixed in the image above. In cover design, this typically translates as the title of the book and the name of the author and, perhaps, sub-title and/or catch-line.
- Title and Author Name: In this particular case, the title has to be more emphasized as compared to the author’s name which has to be easily recognizable. This way the main elements of the poster will stand out and, moreover, will be equally readable even when the viewer looks at the poster in thumbnail.
- Subtitle or Tagline: If your book has a
subtitle or tagline, it should be placed in a way that will not compete with
the main title of the book yet it should enhance it. This is secondary text can
either provide a brief description of the book’s content or come up with a
catchy introduction.
2. Relevant Imagery
It’s vital to use the images that would match the text and the genre of the book, which is placed on the cover. This not only not only assists in setting the expectations right but also assists in attracting the right audience.
- Genre-Specific Imagery: I believe that in every genre there are distinctive signals which, knowingly or not, the readers seek. For example, a detective story will depict rather gloomy and sombre scenes in contrast to a fairy tale will depict dragons or castles. Selecting appropriate images to be on the cover of your book is the best way of making sure that your book shall be viewed as being in the particular genre that it belongs to.
- Symbolism and Metaphors: At other times the elements of the imagery can include hidden meaning in the form of symbolism or a metaphor that reflects some aspect of the book. This may make the cover to be more interesting and thought-provoking so as to make potential readers interested in the story.
