How Do Engineers Balance Their Professional and Personal Identities on Dating Platforms?

Relationships and social bonds are necessary aspects of human nature. Humans are inherently social creatures and the need for relationships be it platonic or romantic will always be there. The world we currently live in however is a hyper capitalist and hyper competitive one. This means that people tend to forget much of their own selves while pursuing financial and monetary gains. This leads to an ever present problem where many find themselves lonelier than ever.

Engineering and it’s impact on relationships

Due to the competitive nature of STEM fields in general, engineers often find It difficult to socialize with the opposite sex. This is mainly because becoming an engineer and getting the academic prere quisites to actually succeed in the field is a lofty task. These students mostly find their lives being devoid of much else other than studying for their next exam or taking notes in class. What social lives they do have tends to be limited to fellow engineers who themselves haven’t been socialized very well. Many of these students grow up to be very socially isolated, socially anxious and lacking any awareness of how to talk to people, making it difficult for them to find partners.

Dating platforms, a solution?

Dating platforms make it easier than ever to pursue romantic partners, all you need to do is put up photos of yourself online, write a nice catchy bio and start swiping or messaging people you are interested in. Eventually you find someone who you end up dating. This is why online dating for engineers can be useful. The problem is a person is more than just what they do in their work life. Many engineers don’t have much of a life outside of work because of how much their work demands on them it turns into in their entire life and this makes it hard to find partners online on dating platforms who are interested in them for who they are at their core. Another aspect of dating apps is the fact that they tend to be very shallow and for many engineers who don’t really have any hobbies that might influence their appearance in a positive way, they can end up getting the short end of the stick by not getting much traction at all on dating apps.

How do engineers balance their professional and personal lives on dating platforms?

The key to balancing both personal and professional lives on dating platforms is by first building a personality outside of work, engaging in hobbies that build your character and social skills, this also helps in gaining friends who might take nicer photos of you, and for example certain hobbies such as sports or the gym, can help improve physical appearance which is key for anyone to succeed on dating apps.

Honesty is the best policy

Many engineers need to be honest with themselves, many of them are introverted people who lack their own company, it’s generally not a good thing to lie on dating apps when the intention is a serious long term relationship, if someone does not hold the same values than it’s important not to mislead them otherwise it can lead to a long-term disaster. Online dating is all about filtering out the people who you do not align with to allow for an easier time meeting those you do align with.

Conclusion

Engineering is a difficult field, it takes a lot out of the person pursuing it and can make it difficult for the person to socialize and evolve this is why it’s imperative for engineers to learn to become better people through hard work on other areas of their lives that does not include their work. This will not only make them more interesting people to be around but also help improve their skills in other areas where they may be lacking.
