Modification Of An Outdoor Junction Box For Bullet Security Cameras
Bullet Camera:
Bullet security cameras, are different and distinct due to their unique outer casing and larger lens which help them to cover greater areas and distances and provide more clear detailed image and better night vision.
Uses:
Bullet cameras are mostly used in outdoor places and places of larger areas such as Hospitals, Industries, Schools, Petrol stations, Airports, Parking lots etc.
Advantages:
Following are the advantages of bullet cameras
1 .Easy installation and mounting: Compared to other surveillance cameras bullet cameras are easy to mount on any wall or vault because of a handle attached to their outer casing which also makes them distinguishable . These cameras can be easily placed and situated accordingly due to their pliable nature.
2. Weather and Water-proof:
Due to their outdoor presence they are built to survive extreme weather conditions including rain. Some cameras are available with built in temperature control gauges.
3. Larger and wide angle lens:
Bullet cameras have larger lenses to cover larger and distant areas and a wide angle lens to provide a wider view of the area where it is placed.
4. Recognition of License Plate :
Due to their extended night visionability and the illuminators present in them they can easily detect and recognize license plates.
5. High Quality Image:
Resolution and image quality vary from vendor to vendor however most of them offer a high resolution range of 2 to 8 Megapixels.
6. Distinguishable Appearance:
In comparison to other surveillance cameras these cameras are easily noticed due to their large outer casings which makes them more effective as a warning for a robbery or crime.
Types Of Bullet Cameras:
1. Mini Bullet Cameras:
A small and easy to install mini bullet camera has wide angle coverage but usually covers shorter distances so they're best fit for smaller areas such as house entrances, garages, lifts or any insides of a building. They are also flexible and easy to mount.
2. Pan-Tit-Zoom (PTZ) Bullet Cameras :
As the name suggests PTZ Bullet Cameras have excellent zooming features and adjustable directions which makes them a good fit for monitoring larger areas. They are used for larger area coverage such as parking, extraterrestrials etc.
3. Outdoor Bullet Cameras :
Due to their noticeable presence they are best at deterring robbery, theft and destruction. They provide better night vision due to illuminators present in them.
4. IP Bullet Cameras:
IP Bullet Cameras are wireless and usually require Wi-Fi or Ethernet for their connection. These connections make them more vulnerable to threats such as port forwarding, on site access etc.
5. Analog Bullet Cameras:
They're also known as Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Cameras. Analog Bullet Cameras use coaxial cables for passing the video footage and are usually used as security cameras. Like IP cameras they're also prone to threats such as port forwarding, recording hardware etc.
How To Install An Electrical Junction Box:
A Junction Box consists of two or more electrical cables and is attached to a framing or structure securely. Removable cover is present outside the box and the cables are clamped to the box with conduit connectors or cable clamors.
·Select an Appropriate Junction Box:
Correct selection of a junction box is important. For example Junction box if placed outside needs to be water resistant to prevent it from rain and moisture. Size of the box should be such that it fits all the circuits properly in it. For example, a box of 2x4 inches can fit a splice of two cables whereas a 4x4 inches box can fit 4-6 cables. A larger box is more compatible and practical.
·Things to Remember Before Beginning:
Before starting make sure that all the wires are voltage free by testing them with a non-contact voltage tester. Cut the power off the circuit you're working on by turning off the circuit breaker.
Equipment and material that you are going to need:
- Non-contact voltage tester
- Screwdriver
- Hammer
- Pliers
- Drill-driver
- Wood screws
- Cable clamps
- Wire strippers
- Electrical box with cover (should be code approved)
- Wire connectors
- Cable clamps
Instructions for installing:
- Mounting the box
First of all, you should split up the circuit wires at the current joint and the cables should be loosen to make sufficient amount of space for the junction box that you bought. Take the box and mount it on the wall with the use of framing or other structure that can support it and secure the screws in the holes that are provided on the back side of the box by the company.
- Setting up clamps for each cable
Every cable should be installed with a cable clamp. Usually the electrical boxes made of plastic do not contain knockouts while they still have clamps for internal cable. Most metal boxes contain internal cable clamps for the ease of buyers. If the cables in your metal box don't contain clamps, then insert a locknut type clamp for each of the internal cables. The threaded end of the clamp should be inserted into the knockout hole of the box and then you can easily secure all the clamps while they are inside the box with a ring shaped nut. Nuts can be tightened with pliers.
- Securing the cables
After setting up clamps for every cable, insert the cables in the box through the clamps. The outer covering of the cables can possibly extend ¼ to almost half inch inside the box and beyond the wire clamp. The individual wires can extend to almost 6 inches in the box. The cables should be carefully secured by tightening the screws on the clamps. Do not try to tighten them too much or too little. The plastic boxes usually contain spring clamps so you might not need to worry about securing the screws.
- Joining the wires
The manufacturer's instructions and guidelines are provided that tells about how to join the wire with approved wire connectors. The green wires or bare copper wires should be connected first. If the box that you bought is metallic, then you should consider adding a pigtail whose length is about 6 inches and should be the similar type of ground wire. After that, attach the loose end of the pigtail to ground screw present on the box.
The white wires which are neutral wires are joined together whereas the black wires are joined together and you can make use of the wiring nut or any other connector that can do the job. If there are any red wires, join them with each other too. Every wire should be assured to be tugged gently.
- End the job
Gently take all the wires and place them inside the box and then install the cover of the box and secure it by tightening the screws. The cover should be blank, solid, and without any holes. After securing the cover, restore the power by the circuit breaker
