How to Protect the Furniture in Storage from Mice

The rat or mouse is one of the most well-known and common species linked to humans for creating havoc in our lives for ages. We all know how tough and tiresome it is to get rid of their presence in cities or the countryside. Today, we talk on how to protect the furniture in storage from mice? Let's find out.

In flats and chalets located in urban areas, the following possibilities must be taken care of:

City rats, aka mice, usually come from sewers, basements, garages, storage rooms, and parks, from where they can enter houses in search of food. They are generally introduced from the street through manholes and drains, climbing the walls, or using the downspouts and ascenders.

Recommendations to avoid the presence of mice in homes to keep our dining tables, sofas and other furniture safe

Let's suppose, you have stored an expensive dining room table or a modern sofa set in your store room, would you allow nasty rats to rip out their beauty?

The appearance of mice within our homes has a connection with unclean spaces specially storage room, garage or warehouse etc.

So, let's not make it easy for them!!

Rats, like any animal feel safer to find a comfortable place for their babies and more when food is at their disposal.

We recommend:

If the furniture is stored in the storage, cover it and use a rat killing spray to keep mice away. You can also spray disinfectant on the cover. The harsh smell keeps them away. But make sure you do this every alternative day or at least once a week.

Keep the house storage clean and tidy

·         The accumulation of dirt and junk, clothes, and paper in an uncontrolled manner can serve as sources of food and shelter for rodents.

·         Store food in closed containers or cupboards, cleaning and removing spilled food debris.

·         Store rubbish in resistant, closed, airtight containers. Do not use the storage room for this.

·         Check heating, water heaters, and cooking.

·         Keep the storage area well lit and let the sunlight come in.

·         Good design and maintenance of drainage and sanitation systems to avoid attracting these mice.

·         Barriers along cables and pipes to prevent the passage of mice.

·         Holes and cracks must be sealed with mice-resistant material.

·         Cleanliness must be maintained, especially in dining rooms and kitchens. See tips on how to store dining tables

·         In places where food accumulates (pantries and kitchens), change their position every two months.

·         Ensure that the doors and windows of the house close well, with a minimum gap with the ground and made of rodent-resistant material, to prevent their entry.

·         Do not store food in closed plastic containers.

·         Store crayons, cellulose material (toilet paper, wet or dry wipes), and glue in resistant, airtight boxes.

·         Do not leave leftover food for pets.

Recommendations to avoid the presence of rodents in communities and around the house

·         Avoid the accumulation of debris, garbage, and food residues, depositing them in suitable containers to avoid the presence of rodents.

·         Prevent the accumulation of water in patios, garages, basements, and building chambers to prevent rodents from coming to drink.

·         Cover community water tanks with mosquito netting.

·         Guarantee adequate drainage of the land near the houses and gardens to avoid stagnant water and the presence of rodents.

·         Provide cleanliness in open areas outside buildings that can be a refuge for rodents.

·         All sinks must have a cover.

·         Trees and tall vegetation should be separated from buildings. Rodents can access higher plants through trees.

·         Basements should be paved to prevent rats from digging galleries.

·         Basement windows and exterior openings must have solid metal screens whose mesh is less than 5 mm, mosquito type.

·         Do not feed animals on public roads or in parks and gardens.

Tips for cleaning and avoiding the presence of mice in our home

·         Although you can find a rat or a mouse in any part of the house, the kitchen, the pantry, and the bathroom will be the favorite place.

·         Superficial cleaning is not enough, especially if there are already signs of its presence, such as casts of excrement. You can follow the following tips to clean:

·         Remove the furniture, thoroughly clean under and inside them, and remove any type of excrement from the floor corners, drawers, furniture, or countertop. We recommend the first vacuum with a vacuum cleaner and then wipe with a cloth soaked in hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, or ammonia.

·         To sanitize areas and materials in contact with food or accessible to small children and pets, you can clean with vinegar or any disinfectant such as lemon and finish with soap and water.

·         Scrub the floors thoroughly with bleach, insisting on the corners.

·         If you have pets, the areas where they eat or are will be a constant priority in daily cleaning and the kitchen and bathroom.

With all that, we recommend to always invest in high quality dining tables, sofas and furniture.

How to protect the furniture in storage from mice?

Rodent feces can be very dangerous to human and animal health. If you have to clean up droppings left by these, always do it with protection and disinfect the area thoroughly with bleach or any disinfectant.

Wire mesh is today one of the simplest and most reliable ways to prevent mice and other rodents from entering the walls and installations of a wooden house. As you know, mice easily gnaw through various materials (even cement), but metal is too hard for them.

Protection of the wooden furniture from mice

For long-lasting protection, it is better to use a galvanized welded or expanded metal mesh, for example, a CPVS. CPVS can be applied in two layers at a fairly low cost, providing a cell size of up to 2*2mm. It is undesirable to use a "black" (non-galvanized) mesh, as it is susceptible to rapid corrosion and a woven mesh: due to its low strength, mice can easily overcome such an obstacle. The mesh rods must be rigidly connected. Otherwise, the mice will be able to separate them and enter. Therefore, meshes of the "netting" type do not make sense.

Experts point out that there is a weak link in the house's storage - this is the place where the insulation enters the siding. To prevent the entrance of unwanted guests, these places should be covered with a metal mesh with fine mesh. The mesh must reach the walls up to a height of 40 millimeters. So now you know how to protect the furniture in storage from mice?
